The first version of a new movie that you see is the trailer. The 60 second to 2 minute preview of the new movie. This trailer has to be interesting, informative, exciting, but not give too much of the story away so you will pay to see the whole movie.
Hollywood movie editor Rudy Vermorel’s specialty is editing movie trailers and has the responsibility of giving the public our first taste of a movie. Rudy has edited trailers for major films such as “A Quiet Place” featuring John Krasinski and Emily Blunt as well as commercials for Ford and Lady Gaga. In this interview, Rudy shares his experience as well as some video editing tips for making eye-catching “trailer” style videos for Instagram, IGTV, Facebook, Youtube, and other social media.
1. Tell us a bit about yourself and how you found your passion for filmmaking and editing?
I was born in France and raised in Panama, Costa Rica, and then returned to the South of France at the age of 12. Being raised in such diverse places, I have gained an vast understanding of culture, people and have experienced many beautiful sights and sounds. I enjoy immersing myself into each new place I visit and gain a new perspective.
My attention to the details that make up ordinary life are heightened and I am able to translate this into my editing style.
I have dedicated my life to video editing, working for different production companies editing Tv spots, Trailers, lifestyle storytelling, Commercials, etc.
Working as a video editor allows me to remain in constant creative movement with people and the environment, to create and present a variety of images, while in constant search of inspiration and new horizons.
2. What are some Hollywood movies and commercial projects you have worked on?
I had the pleasure to work on amazing movies like : ” A Quiet Place” featuring Emily Blunt & John Krasinski , ” Molly’s Game ” featuring Jessica Chastain , “Isle of Dogs” featuring Bryan Cranston, and “The Killing of a Sacred Deer ” featuring Nicole Kidman and Colin Farrell.
3. Video is becoming a huge part of Instagram. What’s your best tips for editing a instagram video to look like a Hollywood trailer?
The key is to choose the right music. Music in a trailer is 50% of the job! You have to have a good ear and be sensitive to sounds, rhythms, and music.
4.What’s a common problem you see with social media videos that makes them boring or not get a lot of attention?
First of all, the quality of the video has to be good. Then, the edit has to be dynamic in the first 5 seconds. That’s really important. And like I previously said, the choice of music is everything.
Here is a good website for music: https://www.premiumbeat.com/royalty-free-music
Price is $49 and the music is really good quality!
5. How can our readers edit videos quickly when they are blogging and traveling?
There are two different way to do it.
The fastest way is to use phone app for editing, there is a lot of good ones that allows you to do simple and clean editing. Some iPhone video editing apps I suggest are:
The second way, in case they have more time, they can use Adobe Premiere ( there are a lot of tutorial on Youtube and they can learn a lot from it ) on the computer and have much better quality video that will look more professional.
6. What are you the most proud of ?
I did reach my carrier goal by becoming a video editor in Los Angeles, the beautiful city of angels.
Also, seeing my trailer on American TV during The Today Show, Good Morning America, the Tonight Show, The Daily Show, Conan, CNIN, and MSNBC was huge for me!
